Most Memoragle Operation
“On my 27th operatonal mission, carrying supplies for the Resistance in France, I was shot down, first by ground flak, then by a ME 110 night fighter. Because I was flying at low level, I had to make a crash landing which was successful on a moolight night, but in a Halifax that was badly on fire. Two crew were killed in the air, but the remaining five survived. Three of the survivors were badly burned from an explosion of oxygen bottles and petrol fumes in the fuselage and had to seek medical aid, becoming POWs. My mid-upper gunner
(really my dispatcher) and I made a successful evasion, returning to England via Spain and Gibraltar in slightly less than three months. Posted back to Canada so as never again to be at risk of becoming a POW. Served #124 Ferry Squadron from January 4, 1944 to August 9, 1944.
