He was shot down over Tunis, North Africa while flying cover for Kittyhawks, by an ME109 on April 19, 1943. Wounded in right shoulder,
aircraft caught fire and he had to bale out while enroute home. He hid out briefly, but was betrayed by the Arabs and captured by Germans.
He was
transferred from Tunis, North Africa to Italy by small fishing vessel and then by train to Germany. He was interrogated at Dulag Luft, Frankfurt. Then to General Hospital, Frankfurt (3rd Allied Prisoner - 2 other patients Americans.) Transferred to Kloster Haina Convalescent Hospital. (Examined by German/Swiss Repatriation Board). Capt. Fred Woodcock, an honourary member of the POW Association was in the same hospital, and successful in repatriation back to Canada. Transferred to Stalag Luft 3 (centre compound), then in the spring to Belaria. On the march in January 1944, ended up in Stalag Luft 3A, Luckenwalde.
