Took part in 1st Op Flight, WWII - 9 Ansons parallel track search towards Germany. Took off 6pm. Sep2/39 with 2x100 lb A/S bombs looking for subs etc. Nov 8/39 - P.T. search, attacked by Heinkel 115. I
was navigator, sent messages back in code. Then somehow climbed into pilot seat ( Harry Featherstone) and shot down one Heinkel 115. My air gunner (Lewis), got DFM. Actually shot the Heinkel with Vickers Mark1, front gun.
May 25/40 flying Hudson, undercarriage collapsed on landing. Plane burst into flames. Crew got out quickly, just before 2x500 lb. a/s bombs exploded.
Incredible sight, low escorting of Dunkirk evacuation.
Oct 26/40 low level PRU flight about 200 ft., Bordeaux in Hudson. Took about 100 photos, oblique.
May 21/41 commanded flight (self & P/O Suckling) PRU Spits, Norway, photographs of Bismark and Prinz Eugen in fjord, started big flap. Two interesting flights - phototype Mosquito and Spitfire racer.
August 20/41 - Shot down 35 miles north of Brest in Channel, by 3 ME 109s while doing Recce off Brest.
PRU recce Brest Scharnhorst, Prince Eugen, etc. Shot down at 30,000 feet, landing in a very rough sea.
Remarkable rescue by Germans. Flying boat tried to land on water. Unsuccessful, eventually a large sea
going Tug arrived on scene.
