“Not much to talk about - routine for the type of ops” On one occasion while strafing barges north of Venice, Don’s engine cut out after the attack. He could not reach more than 1000 feet, had to by-pass German divisional HQ in Venice to return 150 miles to base at Bellaria (Rimini). Down to 100 ft. for latter part of the trip; shot at by coastal defenses en route. Made direct emergency landing. “Sadly the aircraft had to be scrapped”. “After the armistice, our squadron remained active due to the political problem with Tito in Yugoslavia re: Trieste. The Flight Commander and I would take our daily flight over Venice ..... to tell our girl friends we would be in town that evening for dinner and dance.
