History

Don was born in Toronto on October 18, 1920. He attended High School in Toronto and graduated in 1940.

He enlisted at Toronto in May, 1940. He trained at #1 Manning Depot, Toronto; Guard Duty at Trenton; #1 ITS, Toronto; #13 EFTS, St. Eugene; #2 SFTS, Uplands and received his Pilot Wings at Ottawa, March 1941.

Posted overseas to #3 PRC, Bournemouth; #52 OTU Debeden, Essex June 1941; Flew Hurricanes off HMS Ark Royal in Mediterranean to relieve Malta, early September 1941. Joined #33 Squadron RAF September 1941, Gerawala, Egypt.

POW;- Field Hospital, Bardia, Lybia - Oct 5/41; Field Hospital, Derna, Lybia Oct 15/41; Field Hospital, Athens, Greece - Oct 30/41; Dulag Luft, Frankfurt - Interrogation - Nov/41; Stalag Luft 1, Barth, Germany Nov/41 - Jun/42 Stalag Luft III Sagan, Germany - Jun/42 - Sep/43; OflagXXI Dd, Schubin, Poland Sep/43 - Jul/44; Stalag Luft III Sagan Jul/44 - Jan/45. Commenced march Jan/45 to Mariag und Milag, Nord, Tarmstedt, (near Hamburg)  Marched again in April towards Lubeck - escaped while en route and made our way back to Belgium with help of British 1st Army.

Don was demobbed in Toronto in August, 1945. Returned to Pre-war job. Married in October 1948 and have one son and one daughter. Lost wife to cancer in 1987 and remarried in 1994. Nothing else to say - still going strong - golf just as bad as ever and now I have to pace my sex life to only twice a week.
