Ian was born in Toronto on December 10, 1923. He graduated from North Toronto Collegiate and he held Junior clerical positions in Winnipeg. He served in the Royal Winnipeg Rifles (Militia).
He enlisted in the RCAF at Winnipeg on June 18, 1942. He was posted to #3 Manning Depot at Edmonton and then #2 Initial Training School at Regina; #15 Elementary Flying School at Regina flying Tiger Moths and finally #11 Service Flying School on Cessna Crane at Yorkton where he was awarded his Pilot Wings in June 1943.
